Your Own Backyard

A senior dog with a gray muzzle walks across a backyard lawn in the Rochester, NY area, photographed by Laura Sharp Photography.

Why I love it: A backyard garden in full bloom, a yard the kids have run through a thousand times, a property with a barn or a pond or a tree that's been there longer than the house. These are portraits of a life, not just a location. When people are photographed somewhere that's genuinely theirs, something shifts. The kids relax because they know where the snacks are. The dog knows where the good spots are. And the images end up telling a story that a public park simply can't.

Best for: Families with young children or pets who do best in a familiar environment, where the dog knows the yard, the kids can take a snack break inside, and nobody has to stay on their best behavior for a 20-minute drive first. Also a great option for families with multiple pets, senior dogs who can't manage a long walk or an unfamiliar location, and anyone with a property that has something worth photographing: a garden, a farm, mature trees, a porch with good light.

Light & timing: Every property is different, which is why we talk through your space before booking. I'll ask which direction your yard faces, when the light hits your best areas, and whether there are spots you've always thought looked beautiful. We'll figure out together whether that means morning or evening.

Logistics: No parking to figure out, no trail maps, no seasonal crowds. You're already there. Outdoor at-home sessions are priced the same as any other portrait session. The location doesn't change the experience, just the backdrop.

Accessibility: Fully customizable to your needs. Your own property is often the most accessible and comfortable environment available, and we can plan the session entirely around what works for your family.

Pro tip: You don't need a grand estate. A garden in bloom, a well-lit back porch, or a good open patch of grass can be all we need. If you've ever looked out your window and thought "that looks beautiful right now," that's worth a conversation.
