Why I love it: Gosnell Big Woods is genuinely old-growth: some of the oak, hickory, and hemlock trees here are estimated at 350 years old, with the gnarled trunks and thick canopy you can't fake anywhere else in this guide. The preserve also opens into Big Field, 58 acres of open grassland right next to the old-growth section, so you get two very different backdrops in one visit.

Best for: Nature-forward portraits for pets, couples, and families.

Light & timing: The Big Woods trail is deeply shaded under mature canopy, a good option for harsh midday sun. Big Field is wide open and takes golden hour well. Spring wildflowers and fall color are both strong through the meadow and field sections.

Logistics: Parking lot at the corner of Vosburg and Drumm Roads (674 Vosburg Road, Webster). Three main trails: the Big Field Trail (1.2 miles, looping the field), the Big Woods Trail (0.7 miles out-and-back through old growth, just north of the lot), and the Meadow Trail (a half-mile loop through woods and meadow). Trails connect through to Whiting Road Nature Preserve and the Hojack Trail if you want to extend a session.

Accessibility: Natural surface trails throughout, not paved. The Big Field Trail is the flattest and most open option; the Big Woods Trail has more uneven, root-covered ground given the old-growth setting.

Pro tip: Bikes aren't allowed on the Big Woods, Meadow, or Ridge trails, so this stays quieter than most Webster trail systems, worth choosing if your session includes young kids or a dog that startles easily around cyclists.
