Sunken Garden at Warner Castle

The terraced stone walls, arched niches, and ironwork railings of the Sunken Garden at Warner Castle in Highland Park, Rochester, NY, photographed in early spring before foliage fills in.

Why I love it: One of Rochester's most photographed spots for good reason. The Sunken Garden is a formal, terraced garden tucked into Highland Park with stone steps, manicured plantings, and a fountain at its center. During lilac season it's extraordinary — but honestly, it's a beautiful setting in almost any season.

Best for: Engagements, portraits, editorial, couples.

Light & timing: The garden faces generally open sky — golden hour from the southwest catches the stonework beautifully. Spring (lilac season, late April to mid-May) is peak, but early morning in summer is excellent for soft light without crowds.

Logistics: Street parking on Highland Ave and the Highland Park lot off Reservoir Ave. Short walk to the garden. Restrooms available at nearby Highland Park facilities.

Accessibility: Stone steps throughout; not fully accessible for limited mobility. The terrace levels can be reached via alternate routes in some areas.

Permits & Reservations: Reservations are required for wedding photos.

Pro tip: Lilac season draws significant crowds on weekends. Weekday mornings in early May before 8am give you the garden nearly to yourself with peak bloom.
