Lamberton Conservatory

Pink cherry blossoms frame the Lamberton Conservatory sign surrounded by tulips and spring plantings at Highland Park in Rochester, NY.

Why I love it: Rochester has weather. Lamberton gives you a lush, tropical environment year-round regardless of what's happening outside. Banana plants, palms, flowering tropical species, and warm humid air make for portraits that look nothing like anything else in the Rochester area. It's a short session window, but the results are consistently striking.

Best for: Portraits, editorial, couples, anyone looking for something completely different.

Light & timing: Natural light from the glass roof is even and diffused — actually excellent portrait light. Midday works here when it wouldn't elsewhere. Avoid cloudy days if you want the warm greenhouse glow; bright overcast is fine.

Logistics: Located inside Highland Park. Small parking lot adjacent. The conservatory is compact — sessions here are typically 20-30 minutes as part of a longer Highland Park session.

Accessibility: Fully accessible interior with paved paths throughout.

Permit: Admission fee required ($4/adults, $3/seniors, free for children under 3). Reservations required for photography.

Pro tip: Pair Lamberton with the Sunken Garden or Highland Park main grounds for a full session with real variety — indoor tropical and outdoor garden in one visit.
