Ellison Park
Why I love it: Ellison Park has a storybook quality that's hard to pin down. Meadows, creek crossings, wooden bridges, tall pines, and golden fields give it variety that feels natural rather than curated. It's a place where dogs run, families spread out, and the light does something different in every section. I've shot there in three feet of snow and in the height of summer green, and it works in both.
Best for: Families, pets, portraits, couples.
Light & timing: The open meadow sections catch golden hour beautifully — long, warm light across the grass with the tree line as a natural backdrop. Spring greens are lush and fall foliage is reliable. The wooded sections near the creek stay shaded and even for most of the day.
Logistics: Several parking lots scattered throughout the park, all with short walks to main shooting areas. The park is large enough that you can move between very different backdrops in a single session. Restrooms available seasonally.
Accessibility: Mostly gentle terrain with a mix of paved paths, gravel, and natural surface. Creek crossings on the trail sections involve some uneven ground. The main meadow and open areas are very accessible.
Pro tip: Earth tones and denim photograph especially well against Ellison's warm grasses and wooded backdrop. In winter, the snow-covered pine sections are outstanding — worth booking specifically for that look if conditions cooperate.
