Highland Park

Why I love it: Highland Park is an icon for a reason. The rolling terrain, flowering specimen collections, stone stairways, and classic arboretum character make it one of the most versatile portrait locations in Rochester. It's romantic without being fussy, timeless without being boring. I've shot engagements here in every season and come away with something completely different each time. Spring lilac season is obviously extraordinary, but the fall color here is equally impressive and far less crowded.

Best for: Portraits, engagements, couples, editorial.

Light & timing: Soft morning light filters beautifully through the tree canopy on the wooded paths. The more open areas — near the reservoir and along the main drives — work well in late afternoon. Spring bloom peaks late April to mid-May; fall color typically peaks mid to late October.

Logistics: Street parking on Highland Ave, Reservoir Ave, and surrounding streets, plus a dedicated lot off Reservoir Ave. Moderate walking between spots — the park is large and the best backdrops are spread out. Restrooms available at park facilities.

Accessibility: Mixed throughout the park. Many accessible paved paths on the main drives and near the reservoir. Stone stairways and hillside paths are not accessible for limited mobility.

Pro tip: Lilac Festival weekends draw significant crowds. Weekday mornings in early May before 9am give you the park nearly to yourself with peak bloom. For fall sessions, aim for mid-October and go early — the light in the wooded sections before 10am is exceptional.
