Hojack Trail
Why I love it: A quiet wooded corridor with tall pines, open stretches, and pockets of color in every season. The Hojack Trail follows an old railroad bed, which means it's flat, wide, and straightforward — easy for dogs, kids, and anyone who doesn't want a hike to be part of their session. It feels calm, natural, and a little tucked away even though it's right in the middle of the suburbs. I love it for dogs especially, but it works for anyone who wants a simple, uncluttered backdrop with good light.
Best for: Dogs, families, portraits, anyone who likes a natural setting without a lot of visual noise.
Light & timing: Soft, filtered light along most of the trail thanks to the tree canopy. Morning and late afternoon are best for the warmest light. Fall color here tends to last longer than in more open parks because the canopy holds the leaves. Winter with snow on the pines is genuinely beautiful.
Logistics: Easy access from multiple trailheads, with the most convenient parking off Phillips Rd in Webster. The trail is flat and straightforward — no significant walking required to reach good shooting spots. No restrooms on site.
Accessibility: Mostly level terrain with packed natural surface paths. Suitable for most mobility levels and easy for dogs on leash.
Pro tip: Neutrals, deep greens, and warm earth tones photograph especially well against the evergreens and fall color. Avoid bright whites or very light colors in winter — they tend to disappear against the snow.
