Ontario Beach Park (Charlotte Beach)

Why I love it: This is the real Lake Ontario shot, right in Rochester's Charlotte neighborhood: sandy beach, a working pier, the 1905 Dentzel carousel, and genuine sunset-over-the-water light. Very few Rochester-area locations give you true open-water horizon like this one.

Best for: Families, engagements, editorial, sunset sessions.

Light & timing: The beach faces west, so it's a classic sunset location. Shoot from the east side of the pier to get the lighthouse and pier beacon as foreground with the sunset behind your subjects. Clouds tend to make the color even better here. Expect real crowds midday in summer (lifeguards are on duty Father's Day through Labor Day, 11am-7pm); mornings and off-season are much quieter.

Logistics: Large free lot at the end of Lake Ave, though spots closest to the beach fill fast on sunny days. Restrooms, picnic areas, and shelters are scattered throughout the park, which is open year-round from 7am to 11pm.

Accessibility: Boardwalk and paved paths around the pier, carousel, and playground area are accessible. The beach itself is soft sand, so plan for that if mobility is a concern.

Pro tip: For a sunset session, position on the east pier looking back toward the beach and beacon rather than shooting straight out over open water; it gives the frame something to anchor on besides the horizon.
