Why I love it: Fairport gives you real village charm right on the Erie Canal: the historic 1914 Lift Bridge (an oddly-angled decagon that's been featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not), a working canal harbor lined with shops and restaurants, and a paved towpath that turns into a proper promenade through the middle of downtown. It's the most walkable, date-night feeling of any canal location in the guide.

Best for: Engagements, couples, families, casual portraits.

Light & timing: The towpath runs mostly east-west through the village, so morning and late-afternoon light rakes nicely along the water. During canal season (May through October), the lift bridge occasionally raises to let boats through, worth watching for if the timing lines up.

Logistics: Park at the lot next to the Canal Harbor and the Box Factory building, just east of the North Main Street Lift Bridge, or use the free parking scattered around the village. The paved Erie Canalway Trail runs both directions from downtown, with an easy out-and-back toward Palmyra Road to the east. Benches and bike racks line the towpath, and shops and restaurants are steps away.

Accessibility: The Canalway Trail here is paved, at least 6 feet wide, and gently sloped (3% grade or less), with designated accessible parking at the trailhead lot on the north end. This is one of the more accessible canal locations in the guide.

Pro tip: Avoid the first weekend in June if you want the towpath to yourself. That's when Canal Days takes over Main Street and draws as many as 100,000 people to the village for the weekend.
