Durand Eastman Park
Why I love it: Durand Eastman gives you two completely different sessions in one park. The wooded interior has mature trees, quiet trails, and deer that wander through regularly. Walk five minutes and you're at a Lake Ontario beach with open sky and water views. Very few Rochester parks offer that range.
Best for: Families, pets, couples, portraits.
Light & timing: The beachfront faces north, which means soft, even light with no harsh sun angles — genuinely great for portraits. Golden hour on the beach is beautiful in late spring and summer. The wooded trails can be shadowy; morning works best there.
Logistics: Multiple parking areas. The beach lot (off Lakeshore Blvd) puts you closest to the waterfront. Restrooms available seasonally near the beach.
Accessibility: Beach and main paths are mostly flat. Wooded trails vary.
Pro tip: The beach here is less crowded than Ontario Beach Park and the backdrop is cleaner — it's a better portrait location even if it's less famous.
